Inspired by the work of Giorgia Lupi, this visual display of data reveals the relationship between alcohol abstinence and the Muslim population on a global scale. Through research on global populations, alcohol consumption was found to be inversely proportional to the Muslim population and directly proportional to the Non-Muslim population. The peaks in Muslim population (green) mirror the valleys in alcohol consumers and Non-Muslim populations (red).
Research was key in this project for expressing the story behind the statistics. The red wine splatter represents khamr, the Arabic term for wine or intoxicant, which is widely forbidden in Islamic contexts. The goal of this informational piece was to embrace context and humanism to communicate the relationship between two datasets.
